Kenneth Russell Atkins, 84, of Greenwood, Indiana passed away peacefully at home early Friday morning April 18th on Good Friday, 2025. He was looking forward to his eternal home stating several times during a battle with cancer that he “was ready.”
Ken was born on November 26,1940 to J Franklin Atkins and Leota Wedge Atkins in Richmond, Indiana. He graduated from Richmond High School in 1959 and served in the navy from 1959-1963 when he then married Arlene on March 30, 1963. They were married for 62 years! He graduated from IUPUI with an associates degree in electrical engineering in 1972. Ken worked for General Motors in Anderson, Indiana as an electrician for 26 years and then in Wisconsin for the last 4 years retiring after 30 years of service.
He is survived by wife Arlene Dooley Atkins, daughter Cynthia (James) Teller, son Russell (Michelle) Atkins of Mooresville, six grandchildren Rebekah (Daniel) Swem, Elisabeth Teller of Fishers, Michael (Reagan) Teller of Cincinnati, OH, Hannah (David ) Beasley, Tanner Atkins, Austin Atkins, and 3 great-grandchildren Evelyn and Myra Beasley, Oliver Swem, two brothers Jim (Alberta) Atkins of Richmond, IN, and Alan (Kim) Atkins of San Angelo, TX, and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by brother Daryl Atkins.
Ken had a deep appreciation for the outdoors. He loved a quiet walk outside or fishing with family. He was also the happiest when he was active especially loving cycling and tennis. Taking grandchildren on a bike ride or on an adventurous walk was one of his greatest joys and he always gave a big smile when interacting with his great-grandchildren.
In response to his quiet faith, Ken’s life was a reflection of kindness, perseverance, and simple pleasures. Whether he was interacting with a grandchild or playing tennis with a friend he brought warmth to the relationship in all that he did. Living with humility and a gentle strength, he gained many valued friendships. His faith in Christ lead him in love.
His legacy will be in the memories he created and the love he shared with family and friends.He will be deeply missed and fondly remembered.
Visitation will be at Life Change Church on Saturday, April 26 from 10am-12pm with service immediately following at 12:00pm. Flowers can be sent to Life Change Church, 2528 US 31 South, Greenwood, IN 46143. Memorials in Ken’s honor may be given to Life Change Church, Greenwood.
Ken will be laid to rest at Greenwood Cemetery.
